The Rough Science team take to the surf Hermione abseils in search of fossils A still from the Rewind video Lord Puttnam

2009 is a momentous year for The Open University. It's 40 years since we established a new approach to education: a university for everyone.

To enable this approach we pioneered learning through television and radio programmes. You'll recognise some of the fruit of this partnership, programmes like Coast, Rough Science and Child of our Time.
