Bethany Hughes follows a trail of documents cataloguing battles and negotiations over the ownership and use of land.

The wealth of public records of life in these islands stretches right back to Domesday.

The ultimate owner of all land in the Middle Ages was the King. But today, the pressure on land usage is enormous. Do we know who owns this cramped island now?

In the final programme of the series, which traces the amazing growth of public information and official records through the last thousand years, we look at the constant struggles throughout the ages to determine who actually owns Britain and whether we have the right to know who owns what. Presenter Bettany Hughes finds out why a future government may be forced to compile a 21st century Domesday Book.
