This is the most distinctive icon of the city. It was designed by Gustav Eiffel and built for the International Exhibition of Paris of 1889 as commeration of the French Revolution's centenary. Opened by The Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII of England, it received warm praise upon its completion, although it hasn't always been the best loved of structures. Indeed, during a chequered history, it has even been threatened with demolition.

It is 300 metres high and weighs 7000 tons, and was, until 1930, the world's tallest building. The tower has three platforms which offer splendid views over the city.
