The Latin Quarter is situated on the left bank and is one of the most lively spots in the city. Its name comes from the language that was spoken by the students from the Sorbonne, the world famous university. Students still frequent the area - although not speaking Latin!

It houses many student book shops, cafes and is famous for the jazz  that can normally be heard in and around the precinct.

It is now also a great tourist attraction, with numerous cinemas, discotheques and restaurants. Some of the restaurants have basement areas where music or readings are offered alongside the meal.

The area is bounded on the west by the Boulevard Saint Michel and to the south by the Luxembourg Quarter.
