The last of the 2005 series of Reith lectures, given by the distinguished engineer Lord Broers

In his final lecture, Lord Broers weighs the duties of the technologist to the rest of society: just because something can be done, should it? Who should decide where the boundaries of acceptable behaviour are?

He then turns to consider the future - which nations will lead the heirarchy of science in the years to come; and how can we ensure that the UK is amongst them?

Following the lecture, there will be a special, online programme putting some of your responses to Lord Broers. The BBC Radio 4 website has more about Reith Interactive.

Our Experts' Responses

'Global warming and nuclear emissions know no boundaries,' warns Joyce Fortune

'Technology cannot make us less profligate,' says Derek Matravers

'Suddenly, Lord Broers is less gung-ho about technology,' observes Tom Hewitt

'Public engagement with technology - rather than merely understanding of science -is a worthy pursuit,' says Nick Braithwaite
