Directions and an interactive map for the Dunkeld audio walk.
These directions will guide you along the route of the Dunkeld audio walk. Why not print out this page and take it with you?
The walk takes roughly 50-60 minutes if you're listening to the audio, longer if you choose to walk along the Larch Walk at the end.
Stanley Hill is a climb up rough paths (although there would be no harm in listening from the bottom). Additionally, the cathedral and its grounds involve some rough paths and steps, so some points will be difficult for wheelchair users.
Start
- Dunkeld
- Scotland
The walk begins on the Telford Bridge over the Tay, which links Dunkeld to the village of Birnam.
Point 1: Telford Bridge

Walk across the bridge into Dunkeld. Head up Bridge Street, and turn left onto the High Street. Walk down to the Atholl Memorial Fountain, in the Market Cross.
Point 2: Market Cross

To the northeast of the Market Cross – tucked between the church and the tourist office, is an archway. Head through that into the area of parkland behind.
Point 3: Historic Scotland parkland

From here you have a view of the surrounding hills, the cathedral behind, and to your left, a field where the Atholl Mansion once stood. To your right is a small tree-covered mound, Stanley Hill. There is a choice of paths to the top – take one of them to reach the next point on the walk.
Point 4: Stanley Hill

Head down the hill again, back through the park, taking the path towards the cathedral. Go through the gate, into the cathedral grounds, and walk past the cathedral to the riverbank.
Point 5: Cathedral grounds; riverside

You have just walked, north to south, across the battlefield. Now, go to the eastern wall of the cathedral, nearest the town, facing the main gates.
Point 6: Dunkeld Cathedral; east gable

Now go into the cathedral itself. Head right along the southern wall, the one nearest the river, and into the unroofed nave. At the very western end is a small grey gravestone.
Point 7: Cleland's grave

To reach the next point, go through the doorway in front of you, and then through another immediately on your right, into the cathedral tower.
Point 8: Cathedral tower

Now, leave the cathedral grounds through the main gates. Stop by the very first house outside.
Point 9: Old Rectory house

For the final stage of your walk, return to the rear gate of the cathedral. Turn left, and head along the path past the larch trees.
Point 10: Larch Walk

You can follow this path for as short or long a distance as you wish – it leads to the viewpoint of King’s Seat, about 20 minutes walk.
