Courses

The story of maths TM190
This 10-week online course follows the BBC Four programme The story of maths presented by Professor Marcus du Sautoy. It traces the development of mathematics – from its origins in Egypt and Mesopotamia 4000 years ago to twentieth-century Europe and the US. You’ll explore mathematical ideas in an historical and cultural context that are explained in an entertaining and accessible way.

Open mathematics MU120
This introductory course will build your confidence in mathematics and will help you to incorporate mathematical thinking into your everyday life. It looks mathematically at matters of general interest including prices, earnings, health, music, art, maps, motion and rainbows.

Using mathematics MST121
This broad introduction to the nature of mathematics and its uses in the modern world shows how mathematics can be used to investigate and answer questions from science, technology and everyday life. You will study a range of fundamental techniques, in particular recurrence relations; matrices and vectors; calculus; and statistics. Use of computer software (primarily Mathcad) is part of the course.

Exploring mathematics MS221
This course is intended for study with or immediately after Using mathematics (MST121). It builds on the concepts and techniques in Using mathematics and uses the same mathematical software. It also looks at questions underlying some of those techniques, such as why particular patterns occur in mathematical solutions and how you can be confident that a result is true. It introduces the role of reasoning in mathematics and offers opportunities to investigate mathematical problems.

Developing algebraic thinking ME625
This course is for you if you are interested in developing your knowledge and understanding of the learning of algebra at Key Stages 2–4. It integrates development of the core ideas of algebra with relevant pedagogical constructs and principles, and will extend your awareness of how people learn and use algebra.

Developing mathematical thinking MEXR624
This residential course will help you to develop your knowledge and understanding of the mathematics that underpins Key Stage 3. It will broaden your ideas about how people learn and use mathematics, give you experience of different teaching approaches, and introduce you to ICT in the context of learning mathematics.

Teaching mathematical thinking ME624
This course is designed to help you develop your knowledge and understanding of the teaching of mathematics at Key Stage 3. It will broaden your ideas about how people learn and use mathematics. There is no formal examination: assessment is based on two tutor-marked assignments and an end-of-course assessment.
